What to Expect During Your First Lymphatic Drainage Session?

If you’ve scheduled your first lymphatic drainage appointment, you may be wondering what to expect.

Many clients arrive expecting something similar to a traditional massage. Instead, they discover a treatment that is much gentler, more precise, and highly specialized.

As a certified Manual Lymphatic Drainage therapist, I spend a significant amount of time helping new clients understand how this unique form of treatment works.

Your Initial Consultation

Every session begins with a conversation.

We’ll discuss:

  • Your health history
  • Current concerns
  • Surgical history if applicable
  • Areas of swelling
  • Treatment goals
  • Questions you may have
  • General anatomy and pathophysiology of the lymphatic system, for those interested

This information helps me determine whether lymphatic drainage is appropriate, where to focus, and how treatment should be customized.

I’ll also walk you through the treatment protocol, and what you can expect to feel on the table as well as after the session.

The Treatment Experience

One of the biggest surprises for first-time clients is how light the pressure feels.

This is intentional.

Lymphatic vessels are located very close to the surface of the skin. Effective lymphatic drainage relies on gentle, rhythmic techniques designed to stimulate these vessels without compressing them.

Many clients describe the session as:

  • Relaxing
  • Calming
  • Gentle
  • Meditative

Another surprise is how repetitive the work is. MLD involves just a few strokes repeated on almost the entire surface area of the body. Sometimes those strokes are combined, but much of the work feels very much like gentle skin stretching, gentle pumping, gentle brisking, and gentle limb rotations. It is a very different experience than traditional Swedish or Deep tissue techniques.

Individualized Care

No two clients receive exactly the same treatment, although it is true that MLD is more repetitive than other forms of bodywork.

Someone recovering from surgery will have a different focus, for example, than someone managing lipedema, chronic swelling, or an inflammatory condition.

My goal is to create a treatment plan that reflects your individual situation rather than applying a standardized routine.

Specifically: if a patient has just had a knee replacement, the treatment will almost always be a full-body one, but much of the time will be spent working on the affected leg.  Conversely, if someone has lipedema, I’m going to focus the most on the areas where s/he feels the most congestion and pain.

After Your Session

Many clients report feeling:

  • More comfortable
  • Less swollen
  • More relaxed
  • Lighter in their body

Results vary depending on the reason for treatment and the individual’s overall health. Generally, clients are surprised that such light work can be so effective, and create such a reduction in pain and swelling volume. For almost every MLD session I perform, the patient is eager to rebook another

I will also provide guidance regarding hydration, movement, and general after-care for MLD. It’s different than what may have been experienced after past massage therapy sessions.

Clients can expect increased urination over the next day, often needing to urinate immediately after the session. For those immediately post-op, a bathroom break may even be necessary during the session due to the high volume of edema post-op.

Finally, I care very much about continuing lymphatic health for my patients, and provide them with two dry brushes free of charge after the first lymphatic session. One is for the body, and one is for the face. I show how to perform this simple but effective self-care routine, and encourage clients to dry brush between MLD sessions.
