Lymphatic Drainage Massage in Prescott, Arizona
One of the most common questions I hear is:
“What exactly does lymphatic drainage massage help with?”
As a certified Manual Lymphatic Drainage therapist, I work with clients throughout Prescott who are recovering from surgery, managing chronic swelling, living with lipedema or lymphedema, or simply looking for specialized support for their lymphatic health.
Many people have heard of lymphatic drainage massage, but they aren’t quite sure how it differs from traditional massage therapy—or whether it’s right for them.
What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialized technique designed to support the movement of lymph fluid throughout the body.
Unlike deep tissue massage, MLD uses precise, rhythmic movements that work with the superficial lymphatic vessels located just beneath the skin. Because the lymphatic system does not have its own pump, healthy lymph flow depends on movement, breathing, muscle activity, and proper lymphatic function. MLD is designed to support this natural process.
Many clients are surprised by how light the pressure feels. In fact, effective lymphatic work is often much gentler than people expect. Clients often fall asleep under the spell of this light, rhythmic technique.
Post-Surgical Recovery
One of the most common reasons clients seek lymphatic drainage massage is after surgery.
I frequently work with individuals recovering from cosmetic and medical procedures who are experiencing swelling, fluid retention, tightness, or discomfort during the healing process.
Post-surgical lymphatic drainage is not about deep pressure or aggressive techniques. My goal is to support the body’s natural healing process through gentle, targeted treatment that encourages healthy lymphatic circulation.
Every recovery is different, which is why treatment plans are customized to each client’s procedure, timeline, and goals.
MLD is appropriate after surgeries including:
- Joint replacements and repairs
- Cosmetic procedures
- Lymph node dissection or lymphadenectomy (while in remission)
Lipedema and Lymphedema Support
I also work with clients living with lipedema and lymphedema.
These conditions can significantly affect comfort, mobility, and quality of life. Many clients describe feelings of heaviness, swelling, tenderness, easy bruising, and frustration from years of not understanding what was happening in their bodies.
While lymphatic drainage is not a cure for either condition, it can be an important supportive therapy that helps manage symptoms and improve comfort.
My advanced training allows me to understand not only the anatomy of the lymphatic system but also the pathophysiology behind lymphatic disorders and fluid accumulation. This knowledge helps me tailor treatment to each person’s unique presentation.
As someone personally living with lipedema, I can connect directly with the frustration of living with a chronic condition, and the pain and fibrosis from compromised lymphatics. This personal experience always informs my work, and creates a bond with clients, who often feel alone in their experiences with lymphatic dysfunction.
Living with lipedema ignited my passion for lymphatic massage and MLD, and motivates me to pursue best practices, stay abreast of current research, and pursue even more advanced continuing education, so I may best support and help my clients find relief.
Chronic Conditions and Inflammation
Many clients are surprised to learn that lymphatic drainage may also be beneficial for certain chronic conditions that don’t, on their face, appear to be related to the lymphatic system.
In my practice, I frequently work with individuals experiencing:
- Fibromyalgia
- Chronic fatigue
- Migraines
- Autoimmune conditions
- Persistent inflammation
- Lupus
- Hypermobile Ehler Danlos Syndrome (hEDS)
MLD is an effective and supportive modality for each of these conditions. Each treatment is adapted to the individual, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
What Makes My Approach Different?
One of the reasons I pursued advanced lymphatic training is that this work requires a deeper understanding of the lymphatic system than is typically covered in massage school.
When choosing a lymphatic drainage therapist, it matters that your practitioner understands not only the techniques themselves but also the anatomy, physiology, indications, and contraindications involved in treatment. Specialized lymphatic training focuses heavily on these areas.
I combine over two decades of massage experience with specialized lymphatic training to create treatment plans that are individualized, evidence-informed, and tailored to your goals.
As someone living with a chronic lymphatic and connective tissue disorder, I also offer empathy to my clients, and can directly connect to some of the same experiences (pain, frustration, limitations) that accompany this dysfunction. I routinely provide referrals to other forms of lymphatic and connective tissue specialty care in Arizona.
